When we headed for a week in the Central Drakensberg recently, our goal was to do as little as possible – this was our annual holiday and we badly needed a break. We booked a week’s timeshare at the Drakensberg Sun and headed into the mountains dreaming of long lazy morning lie-ins, afternoon naps and plenty of early nights – completely contrary to our usual action-packed adventures.
After a day or two, we had done exactly what we planned – absolutely nothing. Although very relaxing for some of us, cabin fever started to kick in for others and our teens were starting to bounce off the walls and each other. So, we reluctantly emerged from our beds, grabbed our backpacks and headed off each day to see what the Central Berg has in store for adventurous families.

The times when you end up in a place that literally sucks the reality out of your being and leaves you feeling teeny tiny but at the same time hugely significant. Those places where time ceases to exist, where your spirit takes charge and where the meaning of life is within your grasp.
Travelstart asked us to share what we love about travelling. For us, travel is about more than just seeing new places and doing new things together as a family. It is magic in its simplest and most humanly accessible form.
There are certain places where the fabric between magic and reality is torn. Places where people gather and become still and contemplative. These places recharge your spirit and make you content, they strengthen you emotionally and remind you what an amazing gift it is to be alive.
Here are 9 of our most magical places in our beautiful rainbow nation, South Africa:
We recently enjoyed a few days at Hilltop Resort in Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. Renowned for its incredible view and thriving wildlife population, Hilltop did not disappoint.
Our favourite was the Umbhombe Forest walking trail around the outskirts of the resort. We saw so much game on that trail that we didn’t even need to go on any game drives!
We loved the safari night drive (where we had an extremely close shave with a very angry male rhino) and saw many of the larger animals on our self-drive safaris.
Hilltop gets five huge thumbs up from Chasing the Rainbow family travel blog! We hope you enjoy the short video.
