If you were to tell me that it is possible for a family of five from Port Elizabeth to get lost deep in the wild, a mere ten minutes from home, I wouldn’t have believed you. But trust me, it is not that far-fetched. As we discovered on our hiking trip to the Island Nature Reserve.
When I saw that Kragga Kamma Game Park was running a kiddie’s photo competition over the school holidays, I knew this outing would be a winner for us. Our blogging travel adventures have been somewhat limited of late, with Ralph out of action recovering from a shoulder op, and we are suffering from a chronic case of cabin fever.
We have three kids, loads of photographic equipment, and a collective keen love of nature – the perfect ingredients for a successful kid’s photo safari. Those of us lucky enough to live at the coast have a constant flow of visits from our landlocked friends and family. Sometimes we have the time to show them around our lovely city, but most often we are working and are unable to take leave and play tour guide. So, the million dollar question is “what do we do with them?”

Port Elizabeth sits more or less midway along South Africa’s coastline, and those lucky enough to live in South Africa’s fifth largest city, are literally surrounded by weekend destinations, just waiting to be explored.
As PE is at the start of the Cape Garden Route, many friendly people (Port Elizabethans) get wooed by the lure of Jeffrey’s Bay, St Francis and along the coast beyond. Although we have also enjoyed many a happy holiday along the Western Cape coast, we have loved venturing forth off the beaten track in all the other directions from our home town.
