Port Elizabeth’s beachfront is jam-packed full of wonderful activities for the whole family. It offers way more than can be fitted into one day, so we chose a few of the kids’ favourites for our family outing – Supertubes, skateboarding and Bayworld.
We started out at Supertubes on Kings Beach. An hour’s entry pass is a ticket to fast-paced laughter and slippery fun and is an absolute hit with the kids. Spectating is almost as much fun as joining in, but we do recommend that parents dive in and get their hair wet too – it feels like a real blast from the past and will get your endorphins buzzing!
Next, we walked across the parking lot to the Kings Beach Skate Park. Surrounded by shady trees and plenty of comfy places to sit, we enjoyed watching the kids and teens (and some adults too) on skates, boards and bikes do their thing. The park is well designed and beautifully kept and the best thing is it’s absolutely free! It’s perfect for beginners, with some gentle slopes, but also has all the rails, steep inclines and equipment for the pros, which makes it fun to watch.
Now that the kids had worked off some of their pent up energy, we took a stroll around the Kings Beach Park and weekend market. We were super impressed with the plethora of facilities and activities for all ages, and how clean and well maintained everything was. Smiling faces everywhere!
Across the main road is PE’s iconic Bayworld, where we enjoyed watching the seals, penguins, giant turtles and the beautiful aquarium exhibits. The aquarium is quite small, but the quality is wonderful – well lit and maintained and schools of very healthy looking fish. Then we headed into the museum and had some fun with the dinosaur models, interacted with some snakes, and strolled around the very interesting museum. PE people are quite critical of Bayworld – especially since the departure of the dolphins. But it gets the thumbs up from the Dirsuwei family and remains a memorable, worthwhile and affordable family attraction.
